The coffeehouse is a grassroots arena for freedom of speech and individuality Cowan Because the institution became associated with speaking out against the monarchy, it is only natural that it stayed a place to speak freely and helped to establish the idea of freedom of speech. It is the center of Whig theory that emerged from coffeehouses Cowan The Whigs were against absolute rule of the monarchy.
The social aspect of the coffeehouse allowed emerging Whigs to discuss these ideas. The coffeehouse was a representation of a voice for the people, as much as it was a place to grab something to drink. Who knew coffeehouses played such an important role in history!

Oliver Cromwell: Cooper, Samuel. Oliver Cromwell. National Portrait Gallery UK. Politics Involved The coffeehouse was a refuge of ideas, intellectual conversation and drama during the tumultuous years of the English Civil War.
The Golden Age Isn’t Over
During this period of the war, the coffeehouses had to fill the void of the public outlets.
