The Age of Innocence
There's nothing like a good royal conspiracy to whet the appetite of an aspiring writer, and the debut novel from Caro Peacock owes much to the rumours concerning the death of Princess Charlotte in Peacock weaves a tale around Liberty Lane not the best of names perhaps , who discovers her beloved father has been killed in a duel on the beach at Calais. Liberty is far from convinced that this is the truth, as her father had strong views about the futility of duels.
So in the fine tradition of feisty Victorian heroines, she decides to investigate the circumstances of his death herself. The novel starts like a typical gothic romance and indeed is almost too predictable in plot and character until about halfway through the story. Then the author changes the tone of the story and the reader is suddenly in the middle of a political conspiracy thriller.

This does make for a rather uneven story but certainly livens up the plotline and finally grabs your interest. I can't say any of the main characters were particularly gripping, but the historical detail and research was certainly intriguing and well written. She is a brilliant character and following her throughout her journey is riveting. There are lots of twists and turns and as a reader things are not always obvious, which is the best thing in a mystery novel. A brilliant mystery.

London is full of rumours about a chariot with devil-headed footmen who abduct young women. Housemaids' tales, Liberty Lane thinks. She is occupied with two cases: trying to find a missing girl and keeping watch on a countess who may threaten a royal romance. The discovery of a corpse in Hyde Park forces her and some very important people to take the devil-heads more seriously.

Amos Legge, the most fashionable groom in London, is there to lend a hand, but will her unlikely apprentice Tabby be a help or a hindrance? I know some of my readers in the United States have been confused and even annoyed about one book with two titles. The reason is that publishers on either side of the Atlantic seldom seem to agree on titles and want different ones.
